To type the Irish word suí without predictive text, you’d have to press 7 four times to get an s, 8 twice for a u, and then press 4 three times to get an i. Sounds like hard work, and your phone hasn’t even inserted the fada!
Using predictive text, you’d only need to press 7 (for an s), 8 (u) and then 4 (for the í). That’s it, fada included!
The software chooses the appropriate word on your behalf, halving the amount of effort it takes you to type it.
If the sequence in which the keys are pressed yields a variety of valid words, all you need to do is press the asterisk to scroll through the various options.
Another huge Irish-specific advantage of Téacs is that common words with apostrophes, eg verbs in the past tense such as d’éirigh, and d’ól, or words such as m’athair, d’athair as well as words including hyphens, such as n-athair, an-mhaith, ró-mhaith, sár-mhaith are also included in the lexicon, meaning that you only have to press the 1 key once to indicate a punctation mark and continue typing the word as normal in predictive text mode.
